British Sign Language Interpreters

interSchool of Sign Language provides Deaf people with a range of language support services, which are particularly beneficial to Deaf students. We provide note taking and translation support for day to day tasks and in the workplace.

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995, promotes civil rights for disabled people and protects disabled people from discrimination. It now gives disabled people rights in the areas of employment, education, access to goods, facilities and services. British Sign Language (BSL) is used in preference by 70,000 Deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK. BSL is a recognised language with its own grammar, syntax and structure and therefore it is impossible for Deaf people to rely on lip-reading as a form of communication. BSL users need interpreters to access services to aid smooth communication channels.

Interpreting Service

School of Sign Language provides a range of BSL interpreters and communication support workers, experienced to provide language support in a multitude of settings, including:

  • Hospitals/Medical appointments
  • Workplace meetings
  • Student Support in Colleges
  • Meetings with professional e.g. accountants, solicitors etc
  • Civil service/local government appointments
  • Training within the Prison Service

Quotations for Fees

  • 6.1 Fees quoted by an Interpreter, or on behalf of a team of Interpreters, in full knowledge of the contents and conditions of an assignment, shall be considered contractually binding and valid for acceptance for a period of three months only.
  • 6.2 Quotations will be provided for RSLI’s, TSLI’s and CSW’s. The booking duration of an RSLI’s, TSLI’s or  CSW’s is 3 hours, chargeable at the following hourly rate. Please also see the National Union of British Sign Language Interpreters recommended fee’s https://nubsli.com/guidance/interpreter-fees/;
    • RSLI: £45.00 per hour
    • TSLI: £35.00 per hour
    • CSW: £25.00 per hour
  • 6.3 Quotations will specify the fee for traveling time at £10.00 per hour; and in addition milage costs calculated at £0.45 pence per mile for RSLI’s, TSLI’s and CSW’s.
  • 6.4 Quotations shall be confirmed in writing and any VAT applicable, in addition to the fees, shall be stipulated.

Access to Work (Government Scheme)

Access to Work (AtW) is a government programme aimed at supporting disabled people to take up or remain in work. Access to Work is a discretionary grant scheme that provides personalised support to disabled people who are:

  • in paid employment
  • self-employed
  • apprentices
  • trainees
  • supported interns
  • doing self-directed work experience
  • Jobcentre plus promoted work trials
  • You can also get support during a job interview

  • a job offer letter
  • a job start date
  • a letter confirming your interview
